To visit Bulgaria, EU citizens must present a passport or identity card. The incorporation of Bulgaria and Romania into the Schengen zone will not be automatic but, due to the strong economic differential between these two countries and the rest of the Union, will take a few years to be implemented. This means that border controls are still in place, albeit much looser than in the past. Citizens of non-EU countries should consult the nearest Bulgarian consulate for the entry and residence requirements applicable to them.
